#0, I've lost track of a short story

In the story a character takes papers to the town's lawyer that prove that the man is the rightful owner of the town. The town's hotel and saloon owners actually owe the man many year's worth of past rent. The owners are furious and try to cut a deal with the man who negotiates the matter with them. One rebellious owner attacks the man's lawyer and steals the title papers and thinks he's succeeded in thwarting the man's plan to own the town. The rebellious owner is later killed and the stolen papers turned out to be fakes that the lawyer prepared, having suspected that there would be an attempt to steal them. Does this ring a bell for the L'Amour short story that I'm thinking of? Please reply if you can assist me. Thank you!

It's ringing bells for me but some research required.

The English Language is weird. It can be understood through tough thorough thought though.
