"The Empty Land Typo"

From leatherette edition Page 17 Chapter three

Second last paragraph reads
After one scramble with rustlers and two Kiowas, he brought the cattle in and went after a second herd, which he bought with his own money. The Kiowas were waiting for him and he lost his head and his shirt.

Should this read he lost his herd and his shirt?

The English Language is weird. It can be understood through tough thorough thought though.
