"Which book had a mine into a tower "

I know I read a book where the main character was mining gold from the base of a tower. He was afraid it would fall the entire time and even paved a path to make escape faster. I've gone through all my books (and I have them all) and can't figure out which one it is.

Short story = Trap of Gold. Novel = Taggart.
