I know a great deal of original artwork was destroyed in a disastrous flood, but do you know what if any of Bantam's LL vintage cover art (or other western cover art) survived?

I'm cringing, thinking of the loss of those and perhaps many of the James Bama "Doc Savage" covers...

   I don't know that whole story ... I doubt anyone at PRH does either.

After a certain point the artists kept a hold of their work and just sold the rights for a cover ... I think this was once the prices for cover art went up enough so that the artists could afford to get high quality photos (and then scans) of the art made. In the old days they just painted, shipped it to NYC and moved on to the next project.
